It is important to buy a mattress set that is going to give you support and spinal alignment. You don’t have to buy a very firm mattress to get these benefits. You can buy a mattress that is plush and still get the very best support and spinal alignment.

Comfort is what you feel when you get into bed at night, support is the result you feel when you wake up in the morning. You need a mattress set that you are comfortable in so that you don’t spend the night tossing and turning. REM sleep cannot be accomplished if you are uncomfortable in your bed. You may sleep through the night, but if you are tossing and turning, you aren’t getting into REM sleep and won’t wake up feeling rested.

John & Tom's Tips:

  1. Buy from a store you trust.
  2. Measure your current sleep set for height from the floor before you go to the store. Mattress sets are thicker today and you may need a low profile foundation to keep your new set from being too high.
  3. Buy the biggest bed you can afford for your size bedroom. Keep in mind, a full size bed is 54" wide - this means that for 2 people to sleep in a full size bed - each person only has the area of a crib mattress to sleep on.

    Dimensions:
    Twin 38" x 74"
    Full 54" x 74"
    Queen 60" x 80"
    King 76" x 80"

  4. Find the bed that is right for you by assessing comfort, size, and budget.
  5. Come to the store at a time when you won’t be rushed. Take your time trying all the beds and finding what is most comfortable for you.
  6. Wear comfortable clothing so that you are not inhibited when testing mattresses.
  7. Think about your needs and share them with the salesperson. For example: have you had injuries? Do you have back problems? What position do you sleep in; are you a side sleeper or do you sleep on your back or stomach?
  8. Lay on each bed for a few minutes. You should test rest the mattresses in the position that you sleep in.
  9. A mattress and foundation are designed to work as a set. Try to buy the whole set to ensure comfort and durability.
